Small Business FLEX-ability
Written by: Doug Sparks, President / Inventor of Flex Craft
Personally, I have started several small businesses and have known a great deal of others that have done the same. Here are a few opportunities you might want to consider when doing the same.
Light Bulb Moment
Many small business owners generate an idea they believe can do amazing things. If they didn’t believe this would be the new “it” item, they wouldn’t invest their time, money, and other resources, so dearly into the idea. They’ll spend countless hours strategizing and researching on how this concept will look, feel and function until they are convinced the new concept will be a hit.
Critical First Steps
Now comes that fearful moment of making and selling that idea. If they can’t or won’t source the manufacturing of their concept, they’ll take it on themselves. Unfortunately, they can get into real trouble at this point. They’ll attempt to acquire the resources for their new concept, most likely it will fall into one of two categories – too rigid or too customized. Let’s explore each of these.
Too Rigid
Resources that are too rigid, even though the new business has done their research into the new concept and has a fair amount of confidence in the concept launch and early sales predictions, they’ll find that things rarely ever go how they envisioned. In this case, the workbench they acquired is too big or too small to be as effective as they originally planned. Now instead of selling their concept, they are forced to, yet again, revisit the resource catalog again to try and identify yet another workbench too fit their vision.
Too Customized
Where resources that are too customized, the same rules apply. Things never go according to plan and they are in the redesign mode on their concept. The now customized workbench quickly becomes outdated or cobbled to fit the new concept. Even worse, valuable time is lost to identify a different custom solution.
Conclusion
Interestingly enough, their typical response when offering a new idea will be “I don’t have the time or money for that idea”, when in fact, they will invest those precious resources again and again. I recommend the following: when selecting resources for your young budding business, think Flex-ability! The Flex Craft product line is designed to be easily customized, yet rigid. A Flex Craft workbench can be easily altered into another workbench. Flex Craft can be transformed into a shelf, a cart and so much more.
Avoid Murphy’s Law
The conclusion, identify a resource (Flex Craft) that will save you time and money. Flex Craft can be easily altered into your next concept evolution. If you have doubts still, look at the Flex Craft facility. The same 2 foot tubing is found in workstations, information stations, machine framing, racks, shelves and even buildings. So they can focus on the concept and not on the resources. They are FLEX-ability!
